Farewell to Meta

Earlier this month, Mark Zuckerberg announced the removal of 3rd-party fact-checking and certain protections from hate speech against the LGBTQ+ community. While he claims this is in the name of free speech, we all know this will only lead to greater disinformation and harm to individuals and society. As a result, I can no longer, in good conscience, continue using his Meta platforms.

This is an extremely difficult decision, as so much of my personal and professional life exists through social media. I do not want to lose my connections with the chronic illness/disability community or the friends I don’t get to see in person because they are too far away or I am too unwell to get out often.

I hope that activity on other platforms will grow, and I won’t completely rule out coming back here if things change again. But for now, I’m saying farewell to Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp (I already left Twitter/X last year). I hope you’ll stay in touch through other platforms.
